Temporary Protection for Ukrainians: Extended to 2026 — What’s Next?
Since 2022, Ukrainian nationals arriving in Spain due to the war have received temporary protection (protección temporal) — a special status that allows them to live and work legally in the country. A common question in consultations is when this regime will end and what comes after.
How long is temporary protection valid?
As of now, it has been extended until 4 March 2026. It is crucial to understand that this status cannot be converted directly into standard residence permits. In other words, you cannot switch straight to a permit as a self-employed (autónomo) worker or student from temporary protection.
Is there an alternative?
Yes. The new Immigration Regulation includes a transitional provision for Ukrainians, envisaging the future creation of a new humanitarian residence for those who have been under temporary protection. However:
The grounds, requirements, and timelines are not yet defined.
The procedure has not been launched in practice.
What should you do now?
Keep your documents in order (contracts, registration/empadronamiento, statements).
Monitor legal updates.
Consider alternative regularization paths if your temporary protection status becomes unstable.
Stay in touch with us — we’ll notify you as soon as official information on the new humanitarian permit is available.
